I use what I consider the correct tools for the job. I also seldom stop mid ride, so have no need for walking shoes when I am cycling.

There are some many different aspects to cycling.

I've never fallen off either, but that's because I wear flats. I hate the thought if clipping into the pedals.

I use SPD's on MTB and SPD-SL's on road bike. When I were a lad I used toe straps and have only fallen off twice, because of being attached, in over 40 years cycling.
1st time was when I was left hooked in the rain and taken around the corner with front wheel scraping the rear wing. Only fell over when he accelerated away so I would have fallen even on flat pedals.
2nd time I lost a bolt on SPD (2 bolt cleat) and couldn't unclip so I rolled onto a grass bank on purpose (so that doesn't really count).

The secret is it makes you look like you are hard-core. Just like riding fixed does. The truth is that clipless is actually easier then flat and fixed is easier than free, but don't tell anyone please as I want everyone to think I am hard-core.

Seriously I thought that, even when I did come of the other week no fault of the pedals, they unclipped on the fly so to speak.

I haven't tried them yet, but I would like to learn.
Actually got the pedals and the shoes (lovely shoes btw, no different than a good quality black trainer) on sale a while ago, with the intention of falling off when the weather is a bit more clement. Of course, having flat pedals does not mean never falling off

Seriously, wear what you're comfortable riding in. There are benefits to clipless, but it all comes down to personal choice. One thing I've discovered since taking up cycling is the level of snobbery (sometimes with the 'S' silent) but I guess that's life, isn't it?
