Pedestrians should wear hi-vis (or so a lawyer thinks)

In Spain, the "Ladies of the night" are required to war HiViz!

Women touting for customers on a rural highway outside Els Alamus near Lleida in Catalonia have been told to don the yellow fluorescent bibs or pay fines of 40 euros (£36) under road traffic laws.

Police claim the sex workers on the LL-11 road are not being specifically targeted because of what they do but because they posed a danger to drivers.

The prostitutes are in breach of 2004 law which states pedestrians on major highways and hard shoulders must wear the high visibility garments.

A spokesman for the regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra said: "In the past couple of months the prostitutes have been fined for two reasons: for not wearing the reflective jacket and for creating danger on the public highway."

What I noted again was the reversal of the priority... these "ladies" are a danger to drivers!

I don't remember seeing that report, I wonder if any were knocked down with a collar on. From holiday trips to the area I remember lots of the roads being a combination of straight bits ending in twisty turns, so I'd imagine if they were speeding in the first place they could still hit the cows.

Back to flourescent, reflectiva nad contrast

This is again one of those subjects where it is the blind and ill informed imposing their ill-informed decisons on others

The standard (EN1471) clothing has three elements

The first two are "flourscent", bright colours that stand out against the background, orange to provide contrast against light coloured background, and yellow to provide contrast againt dark backgrounds. These are "passive"

THe final element is a reflective strip that actively reflects back th light of a source, providing th angles are correct

This is what is so misunderstood.

An orange hiviz will be no more visible on a dark street than a brown, grey or blue jacket, equaly a yellow hiviz will be no more effective in a brightly lit and light background than a white, or light coloured jacket.

In fact if you take the scenario of an unlit cyclist in a tree enclosed dark road, a white jacket by providing the maximum contrast would be far more effective than a yelow one!

Once again we have the ignorant demanding that cyclists make themselves LESS vsible!

The New Forest is the same, ongoing campaigns about collars for the ponies.

Ironically, despite the claims of cyclists terrifying the horses, injuring them and causing mass stampedes, it is the locls who are the ones causingthe carnage and killing the ponies

What?! I've never ever seen a New Forest pony terrified of anything! Unless they're with their foals, they're pretty imperturbable. Also agree about the driving in the NF - it seems like a few of the locals believe the 40 limit is just for the tourists.

There was a local campaign against a Sportive, and if you believed the locals, all the cyslists were doing was terrorising horses, causing mass stampedes and thousands of horses being destroyed by the consequent injuries.

Oh and Mr Loophole??

Mr Ar*ehole more like (I can't believe I'm the first person to say it).

I prefer Mr "my clients are guilty but the law is an arse" Ar*whole.

I never get this mentality of destroying animals. When they banned hunting I remembering them saying how much they loved their hunting dogs and they'd be so sad when they had to have them all killed as they weren't needed any more.

I second that. Was in the New Forest the other week, giving the Mtb an air and doing some cross country with the Springer running lose along with me. He's fine with animals, won't worry them or even pay them any attention at all, but runs like a mad thing. The horses didn't even blink at me or the dog. Driving is similar. The roads are fairly straight and open for the most part, with a 40 limit, and the ponies again don't flinch as you pass them.
