Most civilised countries expect their workers to work for x amount of years then have a few years of leisure before popping their clogs. I understand the reasons for increasing the UK retirement age as many of us are living longer and don't really have an argument with that. Now it seems that there are those who want to deny us even those few years.

All the more reason not to trust the State to provide anything in the future unfortunately.

There are always some who get a bit melodramatic! e.g.:

I warn you. I warn you that you will have pain – when healing and relief depend upon payment. I warn you that you will have ignorance – when talents are untended and wits are wasted, when learning is a privilege and not a right. I warn you that you will have poverty – when pensions slip and benefits are whittled away by a government that won’t pay in an economy that can't pay. I warn you that you will be cold – when fuel charges are used as a tax system that the rich don't notice and the poor can't afford.
I warn you that you must not expect work – when many cannot spend, more will not be able to earn. When they don't earn, they don't spend. When they don't spend, work dies. I warn you not to go into the streets alone after dark or into the streets in large crowds of protest in the light. I warn you that you will be quiet – when the curfew of fear and the gibbet of unemployment make you obedient. I warn you that you will have defence of a sort – with a risk and at a price that passes all understanding. I warn you that you will be home-bound – when fares and transport bills kill leisure and lock you up. I warn you that you will borrow less – when credit, loans, mortgages and easy payments are refused to people on your melting income.

Well, if they could find a way for me to do my job (involving long hours on my feet plus heavy lifting) without collapsing, why, no problems, I would work at least part time till I die.
Work keeps you active and pays the extras.
No way I would work as a carer of any kind to anybody: too grumpy for that!

Under Bichard's plan the work wouldn't pay for any extras. He wants your pension cut if you refuse voluntary work. I don't believe these type of suggestions are just plucked out of the air to be publicised but are carefully selected to judge public opinion before being seriously considered by the Government.

Awesome. Prisoners get community service as a punishment, yet pensioners would be expected to do the same for their income? This guy is a [Expletive Deleted]

The big problem us but the number of pensioners but the mis management of a long series of governments. Instead of the contributions being invested and used as an actual pot to fund my pension, but is used as a giant ponzi scheme where my contributions today are used immediately to fund payouts for current pensioners.

The Government need a big cash injection into state and government pensions so they can be managed properly. Lets halt our overseas aid contributions for less than a year to do this. After all, India has both a space programme and nuclear weapons sure the wont miss it for a bit.

So if everyone is working, regardless if it is paid work or mandatory work, then there is no need to employ government/council and low paid care workers so would that mean a massive cut in council tax/ and employment tax.
What would happen to all the ex council/low paid careers and government workers who would be unemployed? Oh yeah, they would be claiming unemployment than have to do mandatory voluntary work.

Good job the govermant will soon be giving themselves another pay rise:banghead:
