Ok, so it wasn't perhaps the brightest move, but when my youngest wanted to put out some old books on the pavement for people to pick over, she grabbed the first sensible receptacle that came to hand - an old Schweppes wooden box she'd got from a car boot sale for a pound or two. For the first couple of days all went well - people came, rootled through, books went, she put in a few more - then she went out yesterday and someone had taken not just all the books but the box too and even the brick she'd used to hold down the hand-made 'Free Books' sign. The sign, presumably, blew away on the wind...

I hope karma gives the **** a right going over.

I normally leave out my left over seedlings once I have picked the ones I want to grow for the year . I just chuck the packet into a seed tray so have far more than I will ever use . Next door just takes the lot including the tray  He never gets anything from them as he doesn't repot them . I guess its just greed .

that might save me a few trips to the dump, if i leave the unwanted items outside my house with a "for Sale" sign, someone might nick them !

I once left an old but decent bike out in the street with a 'Free to good home - please take me' note. It sat there all day. The next day I swapped it for 'Bike for sale - £10 - please knock' and it was gone within the hour.

There's a couple of rag and bone men who drive up and down the street in their clapped out transit flat beds, whenever they see white vans parked outside houses they're in like a shot... in one afternoon one'ld nicked an old cast iron bath, the taps and waste pipes and the old whb and toilet while the plumber was inside the house.

when my father lived in Tottenham, anything left in the front garden would be gone by the morning. He left a broken TV out one night, it appeared a couple of days later a bit further down the road. If it had stayed in his garden I would have taken it to the dump, but it ceased to be my responsibility once someone took it.

Same here. They once helped themselves to every bit of metal in my garden - unfortunately we'd left some weight plates out to weigh down some sheeting on the garden. Weeks later realised they'd also helped themselves to what they could grab out of the shed.
