people who talk but don't listen ...

I've just had a conversation with someone who's always irritated me and I've just noticed why! She talks in a flat, monotone voice, repeats herself and says things in a particularly long-winded manner. She never pauses for breath, so getting a word in edgeways is almost impossible. When she does stop talking long enough to allow you to get started on a sentence, she will often cut in while you're in the middle of talking and will talk over the top of you and doesn't listen to a work you say to her, even if you steadfastly continue the sentence right to the end while she's speaking! The most infuriating thing is that if the sentence that she interrupts happens to be a request for her to go and do something, she will finish what she has to say (having interrupted the request), and then sit and blink at you passively - clear evidence that she has completely blanked everything except her own voice! I absolutely can't stand people who do that!!

I met an old friend that I hadn't seen for years. I asked about him, his family, his other mates.

Eventually, he asked how I was. I told him that things had been a bit rough - my mum wasn't well, and my dad had died the year before. My dad's illness and death had really taken a big toll on my mother after 61 years of marriage, but she was struggling on somehow.

So, what was his response?

A big smile, and "Great, so how's your dad doing?"

I glared at him and snarled "He's still f***ing dead, mate!"

and then there's people whose favourite subject is themselves, show no interest in anything you've got to say and no matter the subject, they've been there, done there & got the t-shirt and if they haven't, they know someone who has.

I seem to be a magnet for these people.

I unfortunately know quite a lot of people like this and I always seem to labour under the false assumption that I should be polite, not interrupt and try to listen to what they say - I. E a very British response - what is especially annoying is that one of those people is my boss, who also sits next to me and alternates this behaviour with completely ignoring me, usually when I need her to do something.

In short, I share your pain!

On the other hand I know people with Aspergers who are perfectly capable of having perfectly normal enjoyable conversations.

The woman in the OP could just be a good old fashioned self obessed bore.

We get a lot of people not listening at work. Sometimes on the phone, sometimes in person, they ask a question about recycling and then completely ignore the answer, often asking the same thing again and again. They are generally the same people who apparently never read the leaflets we deliver from time to time, which give them all the info they need anyway.

I think with some people, it can be a symptom of living alone, and maybe being a bit isolated outside work - they have a lot of time to think about themselves, without having to deal with other people. It's all too easy to slip into 'antisocial' habits sometimes.
