Why do manufacturers make adding guards so awkward 😔

Finally got the front guard fitted without any rubbing during this morning's garage session.

So had to road test it and I am well pleased how it looks and performs .

This morning the Cannondale Quick has had it's chain links manipulated and lubed to save fitting a new one when not really required , and then given a quick once over to spot any other issues.

Also had a 2 mile evaluation ride which went very well is all 24 gears selecting and a set brakes which performed well especially when the rear pads are shot so I need to replace them , otherwise all ok .

And the headset has been stripped , cleaned, regressed and re assembled.

Those pads look like they have plenty of life left in them. Why replace? (In the context of the cassette and chain - image above.)

No they were void of braking material at the rear end and had a lot of embedded foreign matters , whereas the chain and cassette were only lightly worn just a bit of surface rusting which is cleaning up .

The Rock hopper has been getting some miles in that's for sure.

Had a spare 45 minutes tonight so I retrieved a set of 27 x 1 1/8 wheels from the loft and started to fit a set of panaracer pasela tour guards , first one went up to 65psi and the tube blew with a bang taking the tyre right of the rim so started again and again it went bang.

Enough was enough so grabbed a set of 27 x 1 1/4 wheels and re started the process and thankfully both tyres were fitted and inflated with no further issues.

Just a shame as I wanted to use the narrower rims .
If they are still inflated in the morning a short road test will be done .

Been trying to get my head around why one of my current bikes isn't as nice to ride as it should be .

So I swapped back to the original wheels albeit with new tyres on for this morning's ride and it rode well, so looks like for the last 7 years I have been chasing the wrong thing 🤔

Need to do a few more miles on it to be sure

Right another 18 miles completed this morning and all was good so it looks like swapping back to the original wheels has improved the bike in question thankfully.

Soon after i got it 7+ years ago I swapped the 27" wheels out for multiple 700 wheel sets either with 6 or 7 speed rear blocks fitted and each time I have struggled with really awkward gear shifting using the ratchet type levers and a continuous chain catching noise and no matter what I tried it has always been the same and really put me off from using said Ike much .

I had thought about swapping the shifters and mechanisms in fact the whole groupset but wanted to keep it original or as much as I could.

So my thoughts are that the presumed original chain is a 5 speed one and just won't work with more gears . Next step is more miles and see what happens but so far I am at last enjoying the bike .

Generally speaking if it came with a 5 speed block then it should have a ‘5-7 speed chain’ on it, but ymmv. An 8 speed block could be a problem for that sort of chain.

Tomorrow morning I am going to retrieve a bike out of the depths of my garage in preparation for a bit of fettling and getting back on the tarmac after 3+ years of snoozing

Bike has been found need to order a set of tyres and get it ready for using.
