Ah now this is something I have heard about and understand. If you weed out the right people it can give an interesting insight to peoples way of lives in different country's and cultures.

Of course. There might also have been beer involved.

IIRC there is a negative correlation between the quantity of beer drunk and the build quality of the periscope.

It did at least have a purpose. It was supposed to enable us to see if the seafront tennis courts were free without moving from a drinking position.
