I've got a 30 gallon tank I'm not using, and have taken it into school. I have full set up for tropical or cold water.

As I'd be transporting it home during summer, I first though of a few fancy goldfish. Then I thought they might be boring.

Then I thought tropical, but I find a bigger group of fish boring and the tank isn't big enough for an Oscar or something (that's what I'd really like)

Then I thought of axolotyls. They're quite cool, but the problem is that when young they need fed twice a day, so couldn't be left over weekend (fish could however).

Then this morning someone offered me a bearded dragon, but don't think the tank is big enough, and not sure if they can be left for 2 days a week.

So what do you think?

I do live in captivity. My house, my classroom, day in, day out.

@pplpilot are you saying animals kept as pets are not happy?

I just feel sad to see an animal kept in a glass box a few feet long. Same with caged birds.

Do you feel sad in general or only when you see animals kept in cages or tanks?

Is the important part not whether they feel sad or not, as opposed to your secondary sadness upon seeing them?

We used to have plagues of locusts at school! At least, we would have done if they had ever managed to escape ... (Given what the boys at my school were like, I'm amazed that I never heard of any of the locusts being released by pranksters.)

They were a bit creepy, but kind of interesting to watch. They seemed to spend an equal mix of time on 3 activities ...
  1. Mating
  2. Vegetarian eating
  3. Carnivorous eating (other locusts!)
Endless fun!
