I was very fortunate and owe much to a very inspiring teacher
I went to a Compreensive School in a small Village called St Ives (
@User76) where there was a school called the St Ivo
We had the St Ivo Entomological and Natural History Society
This consisted of a series of labs for temperate, topical and other environments and we had over 300 pieces of animals form Black Widow spiders, Boa Constrictors, Pythons, salamanders, axolotls, stick insects, locusts, cockroaches, chipmunks, chinchillas, hamsters et al
The entire thing was run by us!
We organised a rota to feed the animals at weekends, school holidays and also in the case of any issues.
At 13 I was part of the group exhibiting this collection at Cambridge University, the British Entomological Society, Natural History museum and London Zoo!
London Zoo would even support us by sending excess stock to us
I have personally signed copies of books from several authors who supported the school
I een learned politics!
When a new headmaster decided we were expensive and could be dispensed with as a saving, we are listed, had letters and support from the likes of Gerald Durell, the Newmark brothers, and David Attenborough.... I actually felt sorry for the headmaster when people of this calibre either phoned him, wrote to him, or on on occasion arrived outside his office
Needless to say the campaign worked
I owe so much to this society and tho Henry Berman, the teacher involved
The point of this.... all the joviality aside, pets give children a sense of responsibility, duty and care.Organising care over school holidays also promotes teamwork and community
Whether you settle for a goldfish, hamster or an 8' python..... just do it!
