Are you a BT customer? They've recently introduced a free call-blocking service that needs no additional hardware. I opted in to it a month ago and have since had zero marketing/nuisance calls.

I had an email from BT about this which said this service was: "free and easy to set up". I logged into my account, went through the activation process and at the Confirm stage noticed a tiny box in the top right corner of the screen showing "+£4something a month". It seems it's not the service that is free - BT appear to have used ambiguous wording to say that setting it up is free.

If a number is repeatedly calling your landline in the small hours, then those fit the definition of nuisance çalls and your line provider should be able to make them stop.

I assure you, Call Protect is completely free to set up and run, I have it and my bills show no cost.

There is another service called BT Call Minder with BT Call Protect which does cost £4.25 a month but that's a different option with a personal answering service, perhaps this is what you selected in error.

As you can see from an order page screenshot, Call Protect is free.

I don't get that screen, though - a closer look shows that I get forced/automatically selected into paying for caller display as well (which I already have), which adds on £4.25 a month. If I deselect caller display from the LH features pack list, I get the free call protect but appear to lose something I already have. Doesn't really make much sense!

I didn't know about this thanks for the info, I've just signed up, I'm plagued with these bloody calls.

The Missus got one today, supposedly from a debt collection agency. It seems she received a parking ticket in 2012 which she never paid, and the bill had escalated to £250. If she left it until tomorrow it would be double. Interesting, as from late 2010 to 2015 she never even owned a car as the DVLA had suspended her licence through Ill health. suffice to say the bounder was given a resounding F off.

That sounds like the guy that phoned up out of the blue about my "car accident".
I've not set foot in a car for years, apart from the taxi home when they stole my bike last year!
I asked him if he was fishing, he said dead serious, oh, no, your details have been passed on by an insurance company.
Aye, right! Blocked!

@classic33 if it's your mobile download a call blocker, like Mr. Number or google a free one, problem solved.
I don't have a landline so cannot help with that.
This is the "service provider" behind the calls. Queried the calls with them and their reply was the number was one of theirs, but it didn't exist, so couldn't have made the calls.

That's why the number seemed familiar.

We installe a new phone with "Call Guardian"

You have to state your name and we decide to accept the call.

(Selected numbers are straight through)

My computer has never run better - not. single call from Windows for months

I love these!

you can spend 20 minutes easily discussing "the accident", how your neck has been really bad ever since, and the recurrent headaches then complain how unhelpful your insurance company and the Police were.. they become more and more enthusiastic

Then mention that they had apparently felt that the positive breath test, positive blood test for Cocaine and the fact the car was stolen were their excuses for not paying up,,,,, does this affect my claim?

..... apparently it does because they all seem less enthusiastic and put the phone down
