Anyone care to recommend a simple photo viwer/editor? I'm not talking Photoshop here, just something for resizing, adjustsing brighness, contrast and so on, and a decent viewer.

For ages I have been using ACDSee, but it seems to have been corrupted and is now unuseable.

Happy to put my hand in my pocket, but not too deeply!

Picassa has some simple tools, organiser and web album space. But you need a google account to get best from it.
GIMP is a more powerful open source editor. Far more powerful than i need for similar use to you.

this is what i use http://irfanview.com/
Irfanview
This extremely versatile and exceptionally well-designed image manipulation, graphics editing and multi-media handling program is loaded with such an extensive collection of tools, features and capabilities that it easily eclipses many of the expensive, store-bought, 'professional' alternatives.
On top of all that, you can expand Irfanview's already enormous feature-set even further by downloading the "All plug-ins" module and perusing the extensive list of tutorials available at the main site.

Note: Install the plug-ins only after you have installed the main program.

+1 Irfanview.
Interface perhaps not the most intuitive at first but very fast, and has great batch processing functions amongst much else.

I've got GIMP, Irfanview and Photoshop but, for the re-sizing and adjusting brightness and contrast which you mention, I nearly always just use the tools built in to Windows.

Between them, Picture Manager, Live Photo Gallery and even Paint are compact, quick and do the job of a "simple photo viewer/editor" pretty well. And they are free.
