Have fallen victim to the old “accidental bump into you” trick, Budapest Metro. Wallet nicked ( not back pocket, my usual place to keep it, but, front pocket, where I had put it, to be safe!). Bank (Santander) were onto unauthorised card use before I had even phoned them. Other than losing driving licence and having to “risk it” driving home to UK with no licence to show, an annoying, but, almost cost free experience.

The Romanian Gypsies in Manchester are both high in number & skill .....

I know this through working with GMP, they would often be detained for fraud offences & on search would be found stacks of small but powerful magnets used to cancel out the tags on store items.

A common trick officers told us was for a women with a 'real baby' to approach a person in a panic stricken 'feigned' manner & hold out baby/toddler whilst shouting in native tongue & using the universal sign language of help me desperation, the victim would hold the baby while mother would continue feigned panic & accomplice would be in & out & gone with the loot !

I saw what I suspected was a Romanian gang taking a break behind a row of shops in Manchester. They were sitting around on walls, smoking and drinking from cans, a variety of men and women with a couple of kids. Next time I came by they had all disappered, presumably back to work the streets.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
The stylish gentleman abroad wears an écru linen jacket, at least partly to give him an inside pocket to keep his wallet safe from light fingers.

And those stereotyping a particular nationality as responsible for pickpocketing might like to double check they're not well down the alippery slope to racism - or have some very solid, non-anecdotal evidence.

"I suspected" "presumably back to work". Sounds like you got them bang to rights. Lock 'em up.

I have recollections of my first visit to London in the 70's and seeing posters on the tube something like "when the lookout saps the mark the dip rips the wad" which I presume meant beware pickpockets...

I was dipped a few years ago, in a quiet village car park. Very professional and working on his own. Nice technique and obviously a well worked routine. Very skilled but do I have ''considerable admiration'' for his skill? Do I f***.

At that time, I was really up against the wall money wise. I had just been paid for some work. £120 taken which was earmarked for the family shopping that weekend. Scratching about to find cash to feed my family all because some sodding low life scrote felt it was OK to take my hard earned money, does not in any way deserve admiration.

I would have enjoyed punching his f***ing lights out and stamping on his family jewels. Twice.

Trafalgar Square is allegedly terrible for it. If you are a tourist (or even a native), watch your wallet/purse when stopping to watch street performers. While you are engrossed, Mr Lightfingers is in your pocket..... One of the hot dog vendors warned me of this one.

I never keep a wallet in a back pocket. I don't. either front jeans pocket, or inside packet of jacket if it has one.

In Benidorm there are teams of people who set up the pea and cup gambling scam on street corners which attract a crowd. I was warned by a shopkeeper who saw me instinctively check my wallet when I saw them - apparently they have spotters watching for people doing just that and I'd now signalled where my wallet was.
