Must be a week for it. We couldn't get to one of our recycling streets on Tuesday because of a man threatening to jump from a roof. Alas, he did, and died.

A medical report said that he was in "a gable condition"...what were you doing in Londres without your usual sweaty escort Claudine? 
As in the press report:
I witnessed such a scene many years ago, in Bradford (happily, on that occasion, the crowd was sympathetic, albeit curious, with no calls to 'jump'). This was on the roof of Bradford City Hall. Who else knows Bradford City Hall? A most imposing building, lavishly decorated in its Victorian splendour, with battlements, gables, coruscations, all excellent places for a would-be jumper to lodge himself whilst chewing things over. And the fire brigade! I know it's not something to laugh at, but standing there in a ring clutching a sheet, shuffling from side to side as the man moved about aloft - exactly like the Keystone Cops!
Eventually the man was talked down, just like in this case.
What sort of people inhabit this planet of ours? Didn't something similar happen in Nottingham, a few months ago?

I'm wisely ignoring the pun. Well I wasn't doing much actually, on account of spending most of the evening on the 59 and the 109. There was some token worky stuff beforehand, involving a lot of biscuits.

A very good friend of mine committed suicide in August 2008, so i shudder every time i hear of such an issue. Judging by that picture people were taking pictures and videos of the poor bloke, someone has to be in an extremely dark place to even consider committing suicide, so these people ort to be ashamed of themselves. How can they even think of taking pictures of this, in the vein hope they might produce a hit on youtube..... absolute animals.

I wonder how far a prosecution for aiding and abetting a suicide would get? I suppose it's 'encouraging' rather than aiding, but...
Perhaps the police should herd anyone heard shouting 'jump' into a zone directly beneath the person. That way they might just break their fall, and get a few bruises/broken bones to remind them of the day, assuming they didn't suddenly realise it wasn't a good idea to be encouraging the jumper.

The fact anyone would want to be any where near the scene baffles me, i can understand a bit of interest, but as soon as i realised what was going on i would want to leave unless i could have a positive impact on the events. They should be sent to prison for their part in a death.
People don't seems to take suicide seriously, some just treat it as a joke, but i'm saying this very clear, it can affect anyone. My mate was a fun loving, care free, popular guy who was loving life, until his dad died, 3 months later he was gone as well. This is why people shouldn't underestimate the issue.

I don't think it's just suicide though, I think some people just can't make the link between death and grief and all that entails, until it happens to them - and even then, some of them can't empathise with other people. Look at the way they gawp at road crashes, and revel in films and games where explosions and crashes and carnage are commonplace. And the way they drive as if life's just a big game on screen and you can reboot when you crash.
And yet, it's funny how some of those people, as The Jogger says, will be the same ones who react with mawkish over-sentimentality and rage against the world when suddenly it's one of their 'own'. I know we can't all emphathise with everyone all the time, but some people just seem to be less connected - maybe it's a lack of imagination.
