Nerd speak.

When you want to contact another computer, you 'ping' it across a network, something which was originally, I believe, taken from the noise a submarine's sonar makes when trying to find or contact another submarine.

So, if you want to contact an individual across the internerd, you 'ping' them in a similar fashion.
