Lucky you - I have only ever once seen a little owl, quite rare in the Scottish Borders, think we are very much on their northern limit. How far away from it were you?
About 15-20 yards. We had been taking photos of a new bike and so were lucky enough to have a telephoto lens with us. They're pretty common round here, I can think of about a dozen sites where if you're patient you'll see one.

One of my distant cousins was recently photographed walking purposefully rather than flying. It is the fifth photo down on this page.
Love it. I think little owls are natural comics, it may be the way they move, or the air of authority in a bird of their size.

A friend of Mrs Cube had a pet little owl that she had rescued. It was an extremely endearing little thing, and used to sit on her shoulder in the house. One sad day it found the door open and popped out onto the patio wall. Sandy was just trying to coax it back in when it was mobbed and flew off never to return.
