As usual, there wasn't a problem until some tosspot journalist predicted that her Islington deli would soon be clean out of ciabatta. ;)

Well people put sugar in tea, on cereal, on some sweets. Can't see a problem with this one.

Besides, it not like I said Marmite is it.

Thing with Pitta is that you have to "activate" it by toasting it first, or else it's rubbery.

If you've got a toaster or grill available at work I'd leave it plain, toast it and use it to scoop up some dips. Taramasalata or humous are the obvious choices, but there's always room to experiment!

Thanks all. As Arch said - they can be a bit dry and I make them the night before so the moisture content will have to be judged to perfection on a timed release to ensure optimum eatability.

I've put gherkins and olives on the shopping list for sunday, assuming that people haven't been panic buying those as well. Potato salad I can do.

And I think I must be posh cos I prefer kebabs on naan.

More suggestions though please.

Toast them the night before and then make butties?

If you brush a bit of water on them and pop them into the toaster (or under a grill) for about 30 seconds they puff up (a bit like a puffa fish) and you can open them up instead of cutting in half. You don't have to toast them until they are crispy.

Hence the cream cheese bit. Bit of philadelfia or however you spell it may leave the bread moist enough

And you don't toast them 'til they're crispy, you need to put them in the toaster and then watch them until the puff up. Pop them then and spend the next three minutes scalding your fingers slicing them open.

Philly and Marmite are one of my favourite "comfort" foods ;)

I'm glad it's not just me that scampers round the kitchen being scalded by plumes of pitta steam

Between that and Strudel I'm not sure many foods manage to reach the same temperature as the earth's core........
