Wow, you learn so much in threads like this.
We have an opportunity to move towards Radlett, on the edge of the Mendips, and giving it some serious consideration. This area is not really working out for us. Hubster has to go to clinics at 4 different hospitals, which is a nightmare. He wants to move somewhere more sensible and was curious to what others thought were great places to live. He asked me to post as I reckon that he's looking for a bit of inspiration for a new adventure. I'm a military brat, so moving is not phasing me at all.

I did specify England, as opposed to Scotland, as he is really, really nesh and doesn't do 'cold' any more. He is a bred and born Yorkshireman, from near Doncaster, but has no family ties there any longer. I'd quite like to head off to somewhere like Bedford, Milton Keynes etc. Great cycling there  I am very homesick for East Anglia though and would go back in a heartbeat if I could find somewhere.

Thank you everyone, it's given Hubster ideas

I'm fortunate enough to live in Yorkshire - and not just Yorkshire, but the capital of the north. :okay:

On the edge of the bustling metropolis, twenty minutes by bike from the city centre and less than five minutes from the countryside. Vale of York to the east with glorious rolling countryside, Dales to the north and Pennines to the west.

But if you twisted my arm and said I had to leave Gods Own County, it would have to be the north Northumberland coast - Embleton, Craster, Beadnell, somewhere like that. Mind you, I'd need a fat bike for those beaches..;)

I love London also and have been in the same area ish all my life . I have the Surrey hills , Chilterns and the centre of town all a bike ride away and as said some great parks if i want to stay local .

I was born and bred in Brentwood, mid Essex. If work/money wasn't an issue I'd happily return to live somewhere between there and Chelmsford. Apart from cycling and golf, I'd want to watch Essex play cricket, and my old team.

It's only 20+ minutes into central London by train for the benefits of a major city, but far enough away for some peace and quiet. There is some excellent cycling to be found throughout the county as well.

My brother lives in the Cotswolds (very nice to visit, but very expensive to move to) and my sister lives in East Anglia, near where I went to university.

I liked Exeter (where my mother lived for 25 years) and the counties along the south coast.

I grew up in Cornwall and lived by the Falmouth river which was really nice, then lived on the coast which I find a bit bleak in the winter. Moved around Europe half my adult life ( Army) then ended up in Essex cos thats where the wife is from. Can't say where I live is picturesque and the materialistic attitude of some of the people here gets a bit wearing , but my missus will never move large family near by ( born a few hundred yards from where we live) . I would move back to Falmouth area if given a choice but it won't happen.

Plus one for Poldark country!! One day...

I grew up in Hampshire which is lovely but I have got used to living in the Manchester area now. I very rarely go into the city which is easily avoided. You don't need to go far to get into the countryside whichever way you go and it seems there's a park, river, canal or bit of woods anywhere you go!

Have fun choosing and finding somewhere more convenient for the clinics. Best wishes.

Llandudno is a lovely town with a nice sea front. Often ride there although the road on the Little Orme gives you a good workout, both ways , and even harder workout on the Great Orme.

We've had several lovely holidays there, we were last there beginning of last month, we had a lovely 5 day break staying in a basement flat.

Essex born and bred, can't really see myself anywhere else tbh, especially as I have been on the coast for the last 30 odd years.
That said, if it wasn't for work, family, football etc, I think about living in Corwall or around Inverness.
We will be downsizing in the next 5 years or so in preparation for retirement and seeing the difficulties my parents had in retiring to a village away from town, we prefer a bus route and easy access to Drs , hospital, shops etc, so a local seafront flat is the preferred option at the moment

I made the move from Stoke on Trent to Buxton exactly 10 years ago, which turned out nicely, but always fancied living on the coast somewhere warmer.
I'm from nowhere near Essex, but used to work in Chelmsford on and off and really liked it. Brilliant cricket ground, nice pubs, and loads of great villages really close by.
Chelmsford is actually on our current shortlist. I really liked living in Felixstowe except for the very dull first and last 4 miles on the same bit of road really, as I didn't fancy having a crack at the A14 dual carriageway  I would head back that way, Harwich maybe, Ipswich. We did have someone contact us about Ipswich and we said that we'd like to view but then nothing now for 4 days. Heigh ho, I suppose.
