Perhaps so

But I maintain that "work" in the sense of "being employed" has nothing to do with tasks undertaken, and everything to do with deprivation of liberty.

By the way, your website is excellent!

I guess it's all about individual outlook and how your life has been influenced so far by negative and positive factors. I don't view work as depriving my liberty, I view it as something that lets me buy shiney stuff for my bike and beer

Thanks for the complement on the site by the way, I haven't put much new content on there for a while, the comments for the Garmin Edge 705 was keeping me busy for quite a long time though!

Got rid of my Blackberry. Used to get up to it in the middle of the night when it went off.

I also received a transatlantic phone call the day after my son was born at 1.00 am in the morning from the big cheese who 'knew' I would be feeding the baby. Yea right.

do those contraptions not have an off button? i'm due to get one myself shortly and it will be switched off when i don't want it pinging at me, unless there's no off button…

edit: it appears they don't

looks like i'll have to make do with putting it in silent mode (if it has one), or finding a place in the house where it can't be heard anywhere else…

Blackberry - otherwise known as electronic tags. You have to be disciplined with them, don't be tempted to check into them when you're out of work (unless on call obviously) as you might see something that ruins your holiday or time off.
I don't take mine on holiday - very dangerous.

Well, I can certainly agree that BEER is a great (necessary, even) consolation for that grotesque affront to my personal autonomy which is employment

Tempted by the possibility of not being missed, I skipped a work all day conference, and went for a 76 mile ride  (2 yrs ago) I wasn't missed

9 years, 2 months, 22 days

Always assuming that I don't actually have to attend on my 62nd birthday, that is...

I was daft enough to waste three years in education beyond my first degree, or I might have escaped at 60.

I once spent half an hour discussing the fine points of a research proposal on a mobile phone, while I was about 60 feet up a tree, sitting comfortably in a harness.

Reception was great.

Perhaps the 'phone might have been answered prior to other activities having commenced (hypothetically you understand).
