But I maintain that "work" in the sense of "being employed" has nothing to do with tasks undertaken, and everything to do with deprivation of liberty.

I guess it's all about individual outlook and how your life has been influenced so far by negative and positive factors. I don't view work as depriving my liberty, I view it as something that lets me buy shiney stuff for my bike and beer

Got rid of my Blackberry. Used to get up to it in the middle of the night when it went off.

I also received a transatlantic phone call the day after my son was born at 1.00 am in the morning from the big cheese who 'knew' I would be feeding the baby. Yea right.

do those contraptions not have an off button? i'm due to get one myself shortly and it will be switched off when i don't want it pinging at me, unless there's no off button…

edit: it appears they don't

looks like i'll have to make do with putting it in silent mode (if it has one), or finding a place in the house where it can't be heard anywhere else…

Blackberry - otherwise known as electronic tags. You have to be disciplined with them, don't be tempted to check into them when you're out of work (unless on call obviously) as you might see something that ruins your holiday or time off.
I don't take mine on holiday - very dangerous.
