After a lengthy consideration I have decided that I need
carbon bike
with a gear ratio of nearly one
good set of wheels.

I had made up mind on a one of those bikes from Planet X.

Then on the way home today, I found Felt Z5, bike reduced from £1700 to £1250, at my local bike shop.

Your opinion will be really appreciated.

I went over to Planet X a couple of weeks ago to have a look at one of the £999 carbon bikes and I saw the Holdsworth bikes they have a very nice paint job on them and I liked the look of them a lot more than the cheap carbon one I went to look at.

You can probably take your pick on any of the 3 you've short listed. The 2 Planet X bikes are still better value than the Felt and I personally prefer Sram to Shimano. Rival is a cut above 105 too.

The Pro Carbon are great frames, as good as any mortal needs and then some. I think gloss black and red look great in the flesh.

None of those are that light, nor are they sporting good wheels, which you state as a priority. They are quite different bikes in terms of frame geometry too, so not sure what your objective is.

You can definitely do better in that price range.

Ribble will offer an alternative to PX at that price. In fairness all bikes, even those costing £thousands, tend to skimp on the wheels. I'm struggling to think of any carbon framed bikes with those levels of componentry and better lighter wheels... any ideas?

Canyon or Rose ship with good wheels. Ribble bikes are better value than PX, but I would point the OP at Dolan. Much better frames, and option to upgrade wheels in bike configurator.

Even alloy offerings from Canyon will beat generic Chinese carbon (which is all PX or Ribble frames are) on weight.

The Felt is a sportive bike, i.e. a bike that resembles a racing bike at first, until you notice the gargantuan headtube length and realise it is a sit up and beg!

The PX offerings don't impress me at all. Just generic frames with their logo on. Not particularly aesthetically pleasing either.

How do you rate Ribble and Canyon?

Thank you all for your comments.
I am a complete newbie and never realised that there are two types of frames, racer and sportive. After reading your posts, I walked in to another local bike shop. A friendly salesman demonstrated to me the difference using Giant defy and Giant TCR. I am a leisure cyclists, do just about 30-50 over the weekend, quite like the sit up and beg position. So it is back to drawing board.

Now the choice is Felt Z5 or Specialized Roubiax triple.
