the headtube on a 54cm frame is 155mm.
not as long as some other endurance bike like cannondale synapse(166mm) and giant defy (165mm), not sure if thats a concern or not

you are talking a difference of 1cm, you can make that up with a spacer if needed.

yeah never thought of that, a spacer will be cheaper than the £500 odd difference for a cannondale

You do need head tube available for spacers
