Hey,

As of september i plan to cycle the short (6 miles each way) journey to and from college, rather that using an unbeleivably unreliable bus/neighbour.

Was wondering if any of you more experianced riders and commuters had any advice etc

Im a fairly new commuter, and I read a thread like this last week.

One very good tip on there was (if you plan on changing into clothes at college) to pack your rucksack the night before with clothes for the day - its a pain in the arse to do it in the morning........it also prevents you spending all day in the office in you green cycle gear because you forgot to pack anything in the rush to get out ggrrr

Allow yourself plenty of time (certainly at first), carry punture repair /spare inner tube etc (and learn to use it), stay safe and be aware of whats going on around you, and ENJOY IT.

Assuming you've not done it already.

Do it a couple of times, at your leisure, over the next month. It'll give you an idea of how long it'll take, what the routes like to cycle etc.

i tried out the route a while back on a very old and run down bike. Over the summer hoping to save enough for a new bike which fits properly (need a far far bigger bike for my 6 foot 4 frame)

You were getting your neighbour to carry you ! wow, i would stick with them, regardless of how unreliable their map direction is.

Yeah they were taking me, i literally had no other way at the time as issues with my tendons meant cycling wasnt possible for me and as parents were in full time work. I really do appreciate my neighbours help, but i hate having to rely on them.

Suspect i will have to go down the pannier route as not only will i need to take a change of clothes, but also all of my work and lunch. Currently on the look out for a cheap rack

Get out there and enjoy it. 6 miles is the perfect commuting distance.

Start in summer before the bad weather hits.

Pick up tips on clothing as you go along.
