Hi everyone!
I'm planning a 200–240 km bikepacking trip through northern Croatia this July, and would love to get your thoughts. Here’s the planned route: Ride with GPS link
The idea is to ride from the bottom of the Koprivnica-Križevci County toward Bosanski Šamac, stay one night, then return along the same route after a rest day — so in total, around 400–480 km over several days.
Here’s how I’m planning the logistics:
  • I’ll drive to the starting point and leave my car there for 5 days while staying at a nearby hotel the first night.
  • I plan to sleep one night in a hammock somewhere mid-route, ideally in the woods near a water source to wash myself (maybe around Donji Miholjac to Petrijevci).
  • I’m aiming for lightweight bikepacking gear, probably with some moderate luggage.
A few questions I’d love your input on:
  1. Car parking at a hotel – how easy is it to leave your car for a few days in Croatia? Do hotels usually allow that?
  2. Summer heat – I’ll be riding in the second week of July. How extreme is the heat in this area? Doable with early starts and enough water?
  3. Wild camping with a hammock – any advice on mosquitos, wild camping etiquette, or specific spots to overnight around Karasica River / Petrijevci?
Any general tips on bikepacking in Croatia would also be super welcome — especially from those who’ve done similar routes!
Thanks a lot in advance

Ask them? I expect it's mixed like most places I've tried. Some will, some won't.

I was in coastal Croatia a few years ago when it reached highs about 40°c. I would cycle then, but slowly and with enough water. I was travelling by trains and buses, though, so didn't much. The USA's NCEI says that the high 20s is the July average, and northern Croatian cities are about 6 degrees cooler, which I think would be ideal, but remember it's an average not a guarantee and you might need to deal with extreme heat. Ask yourself what you're used to and what your options would be.

I can't comment on Hotels, but in the past I've often left my car in campsites for a few days while I've popped of on rides. They will usually charge me a few euros, but at least it's peace of mind. I always fire off an email a few weeks in advance to see if they will rather than just turn up and ask. The only place I've ever had refusal is Scotland last year, I couldn't find any campsites or hotels that would let me leave my vehicle even though they had spots out of the way where it wouldn't have caused any issues.

Heat wise, I've been to Croatia a number of times in July and yes it's hot, very hot, I would make sure you have plenty of water. One thing I've started doing a few years ago on hot rides was making sure I used hydration tablets. I buy the High Five Electrolyte tablets with zero sugar and have found them to really help a lot, both with recovery at the end of the day and warding off dehydration headaches.

Mosquitoes can potentially be a problem, I've not wild camped in Croatia, so I can't comment on whether you will experience any where you are going. I had one incredibly bad night though in Slovenia a few years back. I was bivvying near to Ljubina and was absolutely eaten alive by the blasted things.

One thing to be aware of is bears as well, they shouldn't be an issue, but there are Brown bears in Croatia and Slovenia, though I've personally never encountered them.

Another good place for advice is a read through the comments on this Croatian route on Bikepacking.com, lots of good advice and experience from folk who've ridden there. https://bikepacking.com/routes/bikepacking-croatia/

I've only cycled 25 - 30 miles in Croatia without a problem. I borrowed an MTB and went for a gentle spin. A friend, an experienced cyclist, recently did a 550 mile seven day trip with friends.

They all agreed they had never before experienced so much aggressive horn blowing and close passing. They noticed local riders on utility bikes on hearing a car would stop and get off the road.

They had a great time but wouldn't return.

Last year we went through nearby Montenegro, Bosnia, Serbia at that time of year, though not Croatia.

It can be super - hot; we had repeated 40 degree days in Serbia, and it was quite impossible to cycle after midday. We got up very early and finished at lunchtime, retreating to air-conditioning until early evening. Would definitely advise extra water - we went through 5 litres in an hour between two of us once, and you don't want to be short. But it's not guaranteed, we had some quite cool days too.

We had no trouble at all from poor driving in the Balkans.
