A crazy, but good friend of mine, has decided that on his 40th B/day he would like to cycle from our home town of Princes Risborough in Bucks, to Tenby in the far reaches of Welsh Wales. We have allowed 4 riding days for this and altogether will be a party of about 10 middle aged should know betterers.
It is planned for May 2012.
Has anyone got any advice on either route, accomodation or anything else you might feel helpful
Thanks in advance

I tried to do it last May!

I actually wanted to go to Pembroke from London. It was tied in with the FNRttC from Cardiff to Swansea. Several of us met at Harefield and rode to Cardiff, then overnight to Swansea.

After 24 hours rest and a quick tour of the Gower, I set off West, but it was a 30mph westerly wind. There was no sense in riding into it all day so I abandoned at Burry Port, got blown back to Swansea and had a pleasant lunch with those who had wisely chosen to stay inside that day!

There are some really nice bits and the sunset over the severn was beautiful.

It's described in detail on the relevant thread on this board.

On this side of the severn. Id suggest following the A 40 route but on the south side of the Usk and Towey from Abergavenny thru Talybont to Brecon, the A 40 from Brecon to Llandovery then via llangadog to carmarthen. If your comming over the old severn bridge there is a nice route over the top to Usk and the old road from there to Aber.

there is a route up along the usk reservoir and under carmarthen van that is pretty spectacular that misses out a lot of the A40 section but its quite a climb apart from that there are nt to many serious climbs as you are following the 2 valleys.

if you are looking for something even more spectacular and steeper ther are a couple of routes further north builth way.

Welsh rugby forum 'gwlad rugby' has a cycling section - they run something called 'Carten' every year - it's Cardiff to Tenby - quelle surprise!

Why not visit (you'll have to register to post, obviously) in "Clubhouse" and in the section called "The Banjo Lounge" put a shout out to a guy called Bender - he's a helpful sort. You may find you gain some very chatty company along the way......
