I've been cycling for a while on my old MTB and have managed 50 miles, but im now looking at getting a road bike. I went into my LBS a few weeks ago and was really impressed with their attitude, with about £600 to spend they were suggesting the Specialized allez

They are also offering 10% free accessories, which should come in good use as I'm also looking at getting clipless pedals and shoes. Whilst there I'm going to see if there is a chance to try the bikes out and also get an idea of how much they would charge to set a bike up if i was to get it else where. So I'm wondering what other bikes people might recommend, whether the £150 difference is worth paying and any questions i should ask. I know that i could get something cheaper second hand, but i would prefer knowing what I'm getting and also don't really have time to wait for one to appear before i go on holiday

Excellent all round first bike. Worth using your LBS if you starting out, even if you could save a £ or 2 online.

sorry just spotted they were different. The red one has cheaper kit but is the same frame. I did 5500km on a comparable Trek 1.2 with the same groupset and it was faultless. So go for the cheaper one. If you are like most of us in a short while you will want an upgrade and this will be an ideal second bike!

I agree. I recently came over from mtb and got a very cheap second hand road bike to see if I liked it. The cheaper one will sort you out well until you've got the bug!

I've ridden both them group sets recently and I really couldn't tell much difference, I'd save the £150 and get your self some nice shoes and clipless pedal

I try not to visit my LBS too often. They have an uncanny ability to charm all of my money out of me

Too be honest it's more me. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop recently. :hyper:

Bright red, pink, sun yellow, radioactive green = bike looks cheaper and tackier

Simple white, black, grey/silver = bike looks the sexy biz
