And if you like it and decide to go ahead and buy it - a wee update in six months time on what you think of it would be grand

Whether you buy the bike or not...

...only you, Pompey Princess, can answer that question

Arrange a test ride on the Carerra and if you find it a large improvement over your current bike, then you have you answer.

As for 'wimmins bikes' - my partner started on a gents bike but it was a ludicrous fit. We bought her a women's specific bike and her experience of cycling was much improved.

That said, I recently got her onto one of those cheap tricross singlespeeds and the fit is superb. This bike does have a franctionally shorter reach then say, a gents Specialized Allez and a short handlebar stem (75mm as standard) and although it looks slightly odd, I was able to set her up with the exactly the same riding position as on her Specialized Dolce.

The point here is that the reach of the bike varies with it's intended purpose

Reach is only part of the deal. Having a women's saddle and handles bars with drops that are shaped to reduce the reach to the shifters or shimmed shifters also make a good deal of different to rider's comfort.

Further more, some men would be more comfortable riding a shorter reach frame due to their proportions and I'm aware of at least one bloke who is happy buying frames with womens geometry for this reason.

The other good thing about womens bikes is that they come in smaller sizes.

Well!

Shock horror, the bike is now in the massive 'sale' at £229.99 - it has actually INCREASED by £40 (£189.99 seemed a good deal) so I am taking this as a sign not to jump in with 3 feet and do a proper look round for a bike I am totally happy with. Sorry guys!!! but thanks for all your input. It will be most helpful as I look for new wheels.

Apart from being from Halfords, I cannot speak highly enough of my Subway (now 4 years old)

see here for another posting about them http://www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=16396&highlight=subway

I have been VERY pleased with mine. I love it as an allrounder and have upgraded all the drivetrain and the wheels over the past few years. Ideal for taking on family holidays as it will do road or offroad. To be honest it does 98% of what my Koga Miyata touring bike does and will do 50 mile road rides fine too. Takes mudguards and a rack....

Go for it

Ouch, I did see the Subway's at £184.99 in Halfords at the start of the month when I was looking for something else, so paying an extra £45 just a couple of weeks later would really put me off too.

It's a pity you weren't looking to buy at the start of the year when the sales were on.
