This isn't my video, but I thought it was worth posting here.

I know the majority of folk on here know how dangerous undertaking a bus/HGV etc is. However, even if just one person sees a video like this and learns not to do it, then it is worth it.

Had the cyclist kept going, or had the bus crept over to the left 20cm the cyclist could have been killed. It isn't worth it.

Frightening isn't it.

It's just shame that girl who got killed at Elephant & Castle yesterday hadn't heeded the warnings.

Witnesses say she tried to undertake the lorry as it turned the corner and got crushed against the railings. Pictures in todays Standard say it all.

the vid is one of mine.

...what scary is that I witness this type of riding far too often around town and there's nothing you can do to stop it. it just happens in front of your eyes...

I think that cyclists can fall foul of the same "brain-out" behaviour as car drivers. You cycle a route every day and the chances you take vary. Some days you may be thinking about what you're going to do when you get to work, other days you concentrate fully on the task. We're all guilty of a bit of attention-wander but you need to be vigilant that it doesn't affect your judgement and get you squished.

Idiot. It makes me cringe seeing things like that and it happens all the time. You don't need to read Cyclecraft to understand that undertaking a left-indicating bus is utterly stupid.

Can I also add in another one?

Cyclists who stop literally right behind a bus or lorry. For goodness sakes, if you think the driver can't see you, and if for some reason they reverse.....

Even if you are in a position where the driver can't see you (sometimes not possible to leave a huge gap) at least leave enough space for you to get out of the way in an emergency.

Pet peeve over. As my mum says "no degrees in common sense!"

true. but I bet if questioned, the cyclist would say "well, I was in the cycle lane, so its not my fault"

Scary though it is strictly speaking the bus should not be in the cycle lane under virtually any circumstances.

the cycle lane featured is bordered with a broken white line and so is only 'advisory.' I thought this meant other vehicles could use it. is there a different rule for buses?

It may be a broken line but the highway code is pretty clear on the matter, advising other vehicles only to use it if it is unavoidable. It was avoidable. From your video you can clearly see the driver has a few inches to spare in that lane. Even if he couldn't make it without going a bit into the cycle lane he could have gained a few inches giving the cyclist and the cycle lane more room. It's just plain lazy driving. The only thing in the bus driver's favour is the lane is narrow and he did indicate very clearly sometime before. It's a classic of example of why cycle lanes are bad - limited space, poor driving by the bus driver and insane undertake and overeliance on cycle lanes. Even if none of that was true what Tynan has written would apply.

means it's the same as any other lane devider witha broken line, you can cross it but only if it's safe to do so, ie you hit soeone already there it's your fault

so yes, the bus would be at fault unless it was clear that they were already committed to the manouvre and the bike carried on regardless, even then though, negligent driving to cut in front of someone

seen it now, not that bad, he clearly thought there wa room to pass a sationary bus some way short of the junction, he clocked the indicator and pulled out before it too late when the bus pulled away
