Hello and welcome to the forum.
That is definitely a bike from the US I'd say but couldn't say which make, possibly a Schwinn. Are you in the US? I'm sure @Gravity Aided will solve the mystery for you.

Thanks for reply,we are in the uk and the bike we rescued from a house clearance ,it has a nether land number plate ? Just interested to try and identify it really

That's interesting but I still think it's from the US. What do you intend doing with it? Might be questionable if it can even be salvaged. The frame is so pitted and the stem and seat post will certainly be seized.
I've tagged GA so I'm sure when he sees it he'll tell you all about it.

We are thinking Schwinn Sting-Ray too

Could have started like this, afterwards heavily modified. Although the tubing bends don't look the same.

My husband has removed the chain gaurd that was added at some stage
And has also discovered under the rust a purple colour ?? The mystery continues
