I agree there seems to be a misunderstanding of "cartoon", so I thought I'd check my own understanding.

Came up with this on the web:

"a simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way, especially a satirical one in a newspaper or magazine"

Yet we seem to get many humorous(?) photographs etc. too and, as you say, a fair dollop of duplication

There is most definitely a distinction but I think it is a faint hope that you have

Both threads have been running for several years, with hundreds of pages.

Why merge them now? Yes, we get crossover and occasional duplicates, but does that really matter?

I don't hold with these loose modern interpretations of what a cartoon is. There are too many things being passed off as cartoons which patently are not cartoons.

If it's not "a full-size sketch or drawing used as a pattern for a tapestry, painting, mosaic, or other graphic art form" then it's not a cartoon.
