Thanks again, I missed the Barracuda (above) at the good price by about half an hour, it's still available at £150, but for that money I'm guessing buying used is still the way forward. Been looking for a few weeks now, but the right one still hasn't come along. However... this has caught my eye http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/hybrid-commuter-bike-deore-lx-xt/1013260045, but the advert talks about brands and parts which I'm not familiar with, would someone be kind enough to enlighten me if it's a good buy or not?
Cheers

are you doing the c2c on-road or off-road? basically there are two types of "hybrid" depending on your answer. there is absolutely no point getting suspension if youre doing it on road.

cant really help with finding you a bike coz a) not selling mine and b) dont know of any going for £100, but i would say you really need to be clear what sort of ride it is otherwise youll end up with something unsuitable!

The C2C will be on road, and with others previously making me aware that cheap suspension is heavy and unnecessary, it's not something I'm looking for. As for something going for £100, by budget has increased a little, so I'm looking at under £200 now (but that's either £200 for a whole new bike, or sub £200 for a used with the balance being spent on a decent service.

Thanks for the info on Deore.

I would be more worried about someone sticking yellow dust caps on it ^_^..

That is the sort of thing you are after I guess. If you can knock him down £20 you can buy some smooth rolling City Jets or similar as stated above and still leaves you enough for a gear service at your LBS if needed.

I'll look into the tyres, thanks.

Evidence (sorry, I mean pictures ;)) to follow.

V brakes. Pleased about that too, the disks look impressive to an amateur such as myself, but I've got experience of Vs and generally more comfortable when it comes to maintenance.

I *hate* vees. Much happier with mechanical discs.

Good bike. Keep an eye out for the Aldi bike stuff special buys-they have replacement vee brake pads for peanuts and they do the job fine.

Grip shift or the little clickey levers to change gear?

Oh, and the boggo tyres weigh a ton.

DC Lane's tyre suggestion sounds a good one. I have always used Schwalbe city jet tyres - cheap, reasonably light, roll well and are good puncture wise.
