I really want an app that will give me directions, this looks promising!, thanks.

My excitement was short lived. No offline app for devices, no live direction instructions.

Suppose I will just have to get a Garmin or the new Tom Tom watch thing

Google mapping is often very useful but it has its limitations: eg it doesn't show cycleways, and you have to zoom in pretty close to show tunnels and dual carriageways. Also although it has a terrain view, again you need to zoom in close to show contour lines.

I'd want to have the option of using Open Cycle Map mapping and not be restricted to Google.

IMO Garmin's Basecamp together with topographic mapping from openfietsmap.nl and/or velomap.org gives you the best option - although I wouldn't want to be without the Google Streetview.
