To confirm you are British and not some Johnny Foreigner?

Does seem a bit crap though, doesn't it. Shouldn't they be examining the original passport and making the copy themselves?

Send them a copy of someone else's (a British one, of course!) and alugh about it behind their backs for ever.

Unless there is some secret thing on the cover that only shows up in a photocopy? (I doubt it)

Tell them to photocopy the front of their own passport

Do you work for the government?

6. Photocopies of the personal details page of the Passport may be made, for the purposes of record keeping only, by the following persons:

  • the holder/owner of the Passport;
  • notaries, solicitors, banks and government departments;
  • a person or institution subject to the requirements of the Money Laundering Regulations, or a person certifying that identification checks required under these Regulations have taken place.

or are you a money launderer?

MrWC often has to confirm ID of clients, due to money laundering regulations, and dependent upon company he's dealing with, each varies in what it will accept as proof of ID - indeed many require more than one such proof. But AFAIK, he's never had to provide the *cover* of a passport for any company he's dealt with. The inside showing photo & details, yes, but not the *cover*

The printing has almost completely worn off the front of mine, no one ever says anything about it at borders.

I have experienced this kind of rubbish a few times in my job. I usually state that it would be a huge inconvenience to me, and ask what would happen if I did not do as asked...the reply is mostly "well, you could lose your job/be struck off/etc". I then say 'okay, that's fine by me on you go'....

...I have never lost my job or been struck off.

That's the problem with large chain bookshops these days - they don't take the risk of international terrorism seriously. I paid cash for a paperback at waterstones recently and wasn't asked for any ID at all!!!
