Windermere is a lake, although ironically it's not a mere. Loch Lomond is a lake too.

But I can't stomach "Lake Windermere", which I think was the answer given by the contestants. "Mount Snowdon" is just as bad.

Lake Windermere, although I agree with you, does have practical use as a phrase, to distinguish it from Windermere the town.

There is no excuse for Mount Snowdon, though. The correct name is Yr Wyddfa.
