...what can I do to stop it?

My Van Van was pressed into commuting only last Tuesday and on Friday night I was pulled over and asked for my "license status". I've had a full bike/car license for over 30 years & it's been clean for the last 25+ of those.

It happened again on Monday night, then last night there was a bike cop waiting by my bike as I exited the supermarket, again, asking for my "license status". It's ridiculous, I can legally ride any capacity bike I bleedin well want to, but not it seems, a 125cc bike without L plates.

Take the plates off, and ride without a helmet on the motorbike. Ignoring requests to stop.

I for one don't believe you though.

The bike was a Cat D a few years ago in an area 100's of miles away, it's been suggested that it might have a "marker" against the number plate, but the cops have shown zero interest in the bike, only my license.

I was pulled for being a big bloke on a small CC bike once because it looked like it should have had L plates and shouldn't have been capable of 40mph (it was capable of 60  ) My feeling was the copper thought it was his lucky day and I was a chancer of a learner....

Until I produced all documents for the bike (A Yamaha TZR50) inc my totally unrestricted A1 licence issued long before CBT was introduced.

Next time it happens, explain to them very calmly and politely that you are totally compliant with the law and would like to prevent this from happening again. Ask for their help in achieving this. Keep a record of place, date and time you were stopped. If it persists you can write to the commissioner I believe (might want to look up who it actually is you complain to). Other than that, not a lot you can do apart from keep your license handy to minimise time it takes to get out!

125cc without L plates are regularly stopped. After all, the majority of 125 users are L-platers (not all, and there are good reasons to use a 125 rather than a bigger bike). And there's also a large number of L platers on 125's not displaying the plates.

I used to get stopped a lot a number of years ago and eventually found out a local know drug dealer drove the same make, model and colour of car. The only difference was one digit on the registration plate.

After speaking with the duty sergeant at the Police Station he agreed to put out a notice to double check the vehicle registration before making a stop due to the similarity in the vehicles.

Certainly worth taking it up with someone at your local Police Station if the problem persists.

A mate gave me a lift up to the pub on the back of his ratty commuter bike (Honda CM200) we were passed by a cop car going the other way that saw us turn up a tiny side street shortly after (that's where the pub was), cue flashing lights as he did a U-turn and came flying up to the pub car park. by this time Geoff and I had got off and were walking towards the pub. I don't think he expected to see 2 bearded longhaired 6 footers were the guys on such a tiny bike as his only question was "OK lads" to which we both grunted "yeah" in reply.
