Ranting about a lack of training yet you clearly lack some sort of mental capacity when you try and grab someone whilst still riding a bike?
Can't disagree with that it was a bloody stupid thing to do....

moan like a two year old Vike and give (imho) the Police a bad name when you say you are ''...going to sue their sorry arses..'' next time you get injured.
I did say it was a rant... And that is more about bringing about the training and level of equipment that I have been banging on about for 2 1/2 years...
Besides I think two year old is a bit harsh!

How do you do a ''fast dismount'' as well? Is this where you bring your non dominant leg back over the bike so you are effectively in the ''scooting'' posiiton and then you can hit the ground running after the suspect.

Or from the good olden days when you would kick back off the bike and watch it do ''an invisible man'' down the road. That would be the fastest decent by far although you may liable if said bike being ridden by the ''invisible man'' should crash into a parked car and do some damage.
Actually I believe we're (those forces that teach) taught to lay the bike down. However I didn't ride much as a kid and never learn't those skills. I think you may find the majority of PC's and PCSO's given a bike may be in the same boat..

Don't forget to unclip both feet before swinging the leg over if you are using clipless pedals:biggrin:

Not to be tried if your bike is festooned with panniers or suchlike on the back

IMO the silly thing wasn't the arranging of training that the council chappy was complaining about, but refusing to let them out on the bikes until they had completed the course.
If they were completely incompetent it would need more than 10 hours of training to remedy

Yet another story condemning the Police for training Officers and PCSO's to ride bikes.
After the stupidity of the SUN criticising the production of a training handbook to be given to Police Training Staff to train staff to use their bikes safely and effectively. Followed by ACPO's spineless backing down in the production of the booklet which could have led to a National Standard for Police Cyclists. Now the press in Northants are condemning their force for introducing it.
I've given up trying to get my force to introduce cycle training...it would have cost around £50 to train each officer. Last year I had three weeks off work because of cycling accident caused during a prsuit. Had I been taught a fast dismount I wouldn't have tried to grab the bloke whislt still in on my bike.
Now I'm just going to sue thier sorry asses next time I come to grief becuase of an incident caused by lack of training...
Bobbies not on their bikes
Rant over

Having seen a PCSO riding timidly in the gutter today, I do think training would be a very good idea, a formal standard is needed.

Here is something I have not seen before

I didn't know they existed!

I used to see psyclocops around StAndrews square a fair bit last year. Mostly riding into the pedestrian area of Rose St.

Footage of how NOT to do it is here.

I often see pcso's and even fulltime coppers on mtb's in my area. IMHO, all of them could could do with the 'knowledge' that cyclists pick up from other peoples mistakes that are reported on here - eg. give car doors a wide berth etc. on here or via cyclecraftexperience. I assume that most of them are given a bike with the words 'you know how to ride a bike dontcha', despite not being not being aware of the hazards in reality. Even 10 hours training is only a start imho for most of them.

I was surprised this evening when I followed one for a few hundred yards today (before overtaking ) who seemingly actually had some roadcraft. It certainly is not the norm.

You're right, it was unlikely to have been me.

was behind a bike PCSO today at a set of lights
His rear light was very dim (time to change batteries!) and was also pointing at his right thigh.
His shoelaces were flapping (wait till that gets into your chain bud!)
He was really slow pedalling
and he was riding in the door zone.

Most coppers and the 1/2 police people need to be get on their bikes, not so that they catch more criminals, but because they need to lose weight as some are seriously FAT !
