Politics on CycleChat

Hello Everyone,

I'm making a few changes to the politics forum and political discussion on CycleChat:
  • Name change. The politics forum has been renamed to Politics and Current Affairs.

  • Politics Opt-in. The politics forum is now opt-in. It's easy to opt-in and there are signposts in the Cafe and Support forums as well as instructions in the new member welcome message.

  • Political and Personal Differences. Please keep your political and personal differences inside the politics forum. If you would prefer not to interact with a particular member because you feel your politics, ethics or morals are incompatible - use the ignore feature.

  • Politics in the Politics forum. Please restrict political debate to the politics forum only with the exception of where it relates to cycling (which should go in the cycling parts of CC). If you feel a thread should be moved to the politics forum, report it and let the moderators decide. Do not try to manipulate the discussion to force a move - your posts will be deleted. Equally, starting a non-cycling political thread outside of the politics forum will see it moved there. Political debate in the politics forum only from now on please.
There are some new rules and moderation changes coming in a few day's time too; but if you want to debate politics and current affairs on CycleChat from now on please opt-in and keep to the politics forum.

Thanks,
Shaun

As a follow-up to the name change a moderator asked me how we are going to define whether a thread is a Cafe or Current Affairs one?

A good question. Most of the time it should be fairly obvious but as a general distinction:
  • Cafe - agreeable chat and discussion around a subject; sharing experiences; not a debate; generally free of arguments.

  • Current Affairs - opposing views, opinions and ideals; pro / con debate; trying to persuade others of a position’s merits; an element of argument and/or disagreement.
There are always going to be threads that are borderline or subject to reader interpretation though, so in such cases a moderator decision will be final.

Cheers,
Shaun
