I've decided to upgrade my little pond (120 litres) to something significantly larger, the one I'm looking at is 1200 litres.
Obviously I will upgrade pump, filters etc, just wondering if there are any pitfalls I should know about to avoid, any tips from your good selves about any aspect of pond keeping would be nice as well. Indeed if you want to post some pics of your own ponds, I find that is one of the best ways of finding inspiration and finding ideas when creating something yourself.
Any help appreciated.

Yes, at the minute I've only got five small goldfish and a couple of golden tench, but would like a few more. One of the reasons for upgrading. Not going down the specialist route of koi though!

A biological filter would be your best bet then. It acts like a sewerage plant in effect. Bacteria and bugs inhabit the filter and get rid of the nasties. You may want a UV filter as well. It will stop your pond water from turning green, by killing off the algae. If you go to a reputable place or look on the Internet, they can advise you on the various sizes you need given the size and water capacity ot your pond. And don't forget, if having fish, then you need a minimum depth of 2 feet. A depth of 3 feet would be better for the fish in the winter. Good luck

It is for tips like this that I started this thread! I would never have thought of using rain water in conjunction with the construction!
Although as welsh dragon pointed out above, bio logical filters seem to be the way to go for the majority.

now that is a real pond! mine is on a much much smaller scale.

That's not a pond.....that's a bloomin lake!

We had a much smaller pond when we lived in Birmingham, and had to have filters, uv filters etc. Even with a pond like we have now, maintenance is still needed. Weeds need to be removed cutting back plants, sometimes in prolonged hot weather we have to pump water from the stream into the pond. But whatever the size of pond you have, the sound of running water is very relaxing.

My sister had a pond with lots of fish in it, but then they started disappearing. It turned out that the twin tomcats that she got to replace her dead female cat were going fishing at night!
