Popped to Tesco on the way home...

In our local Tescos - a giant store - there were two Sheffield stand when it opened. They lasted about 6 months. There is now no official parking for cycles. On the rare occasions that I go there, but always on my bike, I lock my bike inconvneiently to one of the trolly parks at the entrance to the shop.

I have asked them on numerous occasions if there are any plans to reinstate bike parking and on each occasion I've been told there is no demand.

Before I moved I used to take my full sized bike into somerfield and wheel it round with me. It annoyed them no end but I never got thrown out for it. Came to a compromise when the security guard used to mind it for me just inside the entrance. That was good service when I think about it

No help to those down south but the planners insist in bike parking in Scotland and of a good standard .

A folded up Brompton fits nicely in a supermarket trolley, leaving enough room for a pannier-full of shopping.

I know Tesco bike stands are noted for their general crappiness but...

• Rode into car park
• Rode to bike parking area
• Looked at bike stand, bent, with bolts sticking up
• Picked up bike stand with one hand, not fastened to ground at all
• Didn't bother

There was a fair bit of opposition to the Tesco Express opening where it did. Would provision for cycle parking have been part of the planning, for things like this, do you think?

There are a number of stores round the land where they aren't bolted down. I've complained about this store before. Weirdly enough the new tescos at Totley and Earl Marshall have much higher standards.

As for what the council think, their stock response is "Standards for cycle parking do exist but are difficult to enforce."

Depends how mean you want to be... Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative have just installed a poxy two stands. Between tescos and themselves they have those 4 at the back, the rack that isn't bolted and 2 incorrectly fitted stands at the door. Makes your bold statement the other week about Decathlon seem even better. I expect Tescos to screw things up, EBC are a serious bicycle shop and shouldn't behave like that.

It's fairly standard behaviour for Tescos. People always come on here and say yeah but my Tescos is great. My opinions of tescos isn't based on one store, I surveyed about 100 tescos stores I think it was. They all do bad things but on average, tescos are by far the worst behaved supermarket for cycle parking.

Perhaps they do it intentionally to force you to drive. After all, you can't put much on your bike rack, so if you drive, you can fill up your boot with their special offers & 'BOGOFs'.

Nay boy - get the Eazy Wheels! Gripping the shopping trolley in one hand and your Brooks in the other, a crazed look and all clear the aisle as you thunder down eight wheels a-spinning (well 7 for me 'cos I got the cheaper model).

Agree on EBC, I was surprised shocked to see such poor provision when I went to check it out.

I wouldn't argue with that. Even where they have got reasonable cycle parking it seems to be stuck in a bad place. They're the worst of the four but the others aren't overall due any praise. As you say there are just a few stores which are the exception to the rule.

Perhaps its that cyclists don't spend enough at the filling station, can't be the store that's the problem, I often carry over £50 worth of shopping by bike and I've seen plenty of others doing the same.

Tescos are just so variable about it. This is the totley store that you can now see on streetview for the first time six trapezium sheffields anchored to the ground and about 30 ft from the entrance (to the right of the corsa). The other store I mentioned isn't completely on as they were still building it, but 3 stands very close to the entrance (they made the minor mistake of installing it at right angles and a bit too close so you can only store 5 bikes, but good on the whole).

I'd say sainsburys are all right ish on their cycle parking. They get let down by the smaller stores that were formerly Jacksons. Co-op has quite a high rate of small stores having parking (something like 40% - depressing to say that is good), Waitrose is all right. Morrisons make some kind of effort even though it's a bit misguided on the ones I've surveyed and ASDA are a bit patchy.

As for spend Jonesy will probably be along to point out that cyclists do spend money in stores and more more frequent smaller trips, generating revenue.

Those tescos ones are crap anyway, deliberately put at the edge of the car park, as far away as they could get away with . If I shopped there (which I don't) I'd use the ones behind and underneath that are covered.

I suppose they should be criticised heavily (Tescos) because like EBC they are brand spanking new builds and should be held to a much higher standard than things that are already there.
