Are there any bike friendly routes to/from the Portsmouth ferry port? Looking at maps, it looks to be a maze of one way systems and major road roundabouts etc.

I'll probably be heading to/from the direction of the most convenient railway station, which looks to be Portsmouth and Southsea.

I would use the underpass under the M275 and get onto Kingston Cresent (no cycle lane) and head to North End - then right towards the main Station.

Looking at maps, would Portsmouth Harbour station make more sense? It seems that would avoid crossing major roads.

The railway station is very close to the ferry port but it is through the centre of town. If you want to ride out of the city there's a cycle path that runs under the M275 roundabout just outside the port, then use Twyford Avenue to get to the Mountbatten sports centre, from there the cycle path runs alongside the estuary to Cosham (via another underpass). We use this route a lot.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I may yet cycle out of Portsmouth so would use the Twyford Ave to Cosham route.

I'm just sussing out alternatives in the event I leave the overnight ferry having had next to no sleep!

The last time I rode home from the overnight ferry I'd got to bed about 3am after an eight hour drinking session (preceded by a 112 mile ride), the six of us at the burger bar at the top of Portsdown hill looked like a scene from Dawn of the Dead.

When I was planning my Portsmouth route last year I found this pdf map handy.

When it came to the approach to the port from Havant along the not-pretty-but-effective cycle paths beside the A27 etc it was fine. When trying to find the station from the port I just rode around Portsmouth at random for ages until I found the station. (I don't recommend this option, by the way)
