Every morning, as I cycle along Ferry Road and then up Telford Road, I come across many ADM Milling lorries going my way - large, tanker-type vehicles carrying milled flour from the Chancelot Mill in Leith.

They're unfailingly courteous and careful, always waiting until it's safe to pass me and giving me acres of space as they pass. They're a complete contrast to many other drivers on the road.

I started on the Ferry Road route last year, and not once has an ADM driver caused me any bother. So today I thought it would be good to give them their due and I dropped an email to ADM, asking them to pass on my thanks to their drivers. This is the response I got:

"Good Afternoon Grant,

And many thanks for your recent mail, It is always pleasing to receive positive responses and perceptions from the public as this is not always the case unfortunately with regards to large goods vehicles. ADM Milling takes safety and courtesy to all road users as a matter of prime importance and this is supported through a number of initiatives including regular driver training and assessments. I am extremely pleased to hear "real life" examples of this within out local community which reinforces our training ethos, thank you once again for taking the time to provide this positive feedback and hope you enjoy many more years of cycling around our great city.

Regards

Stephen

A big thumbs-up to the ADM drivers. They're real gents on the road ;)

With the wheat crop rotting in soggy fields, and bread prices predicted to go up, maybe you should be trying to tap them for some free flour!;)

Nice one. It's so easy to to forget to praise, when it's all to easy to remember to criticise....

You're right, Arch - which was why I decided to email them. Something that was brought up in a team meeting at work yesterday made me realise that we really don't give enough praise when praise is due. (We were moaning that our department always fails to recognise success; so much so that they no longer even publish the result of the promotions board and those promoted no longer even tell their workmates as they feel ashamed because it all feels so underhand and secret).

Perhaps we should instigate a CC 'Good Friday' where we give positive feedback to a company / individual who deserves it ? We could award them a "CC Approved" badge to put on their website ;)

Well done, Grant and thumbs-up to ADM!

Here's a reply I got from Aggregate Industries (including parts of email trail) after I contacted them to compliment their excellent HGV driver:
Masood

thank you for taking the time to contact us, it is almost impossible to
identify the driver as we have in excess of 80 working from our Croft
quarry, but I will display your email in the drivers room.

Regards

John

your-subject: Excellent lorry driving

your-comment: Hello
I would just like to compliment one of your lorry drivers, who was behind
me on Station Rd, Wigston, this morning about 8:30am, heading Westbound
towards Blaby. I'm a cyclist and he showed patience and gave me plenty of
room when he eventually overtook. Unfortunately, I don't have his
registration number, but if the driver can be traced, please pass on my
compliments.

Cool idea!

BTW, talking about good management, I saw this at a museum over the weekend, from the 40's I'd guess. (sorry it's bit hard to read, it was on the other side of glass) Pretty much sums up the entire "Managment and Human Resources" section of a modern bookshop, in a few sentences.

So many managers could learn so much from that bit of card...
