So having got my Euro's from the local PO I kept my little receipt, as instructed, so that I could swap any unspent lolly back into Sterling ...............''commission free''

Oh yes isn't that so tempting. Like a total berk I expected a reasonable-ish exchange rate. I never even thought about seeing what I could get elsewhere.

So I ask son number one if he would call in and change back 395 Euros for me. I was expecting...........I don't know £360 quid back, even a little more.

£303. exchange rate 1.30 ...........................NO COMMISSION mind you.

They have caught me once. It won't happen again. The B*stards.

isn't the exchange rate a fixed thing everywhere for that particular day?

Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice. Anyone who changes money "commission free" will have a wider split on the exchange rate, and vice versa - they are all in the same market.

I just keep my unspent Euros for next time.

I thought the principle was pretty universal, sell at one rate, buy back at another, its always been that way...well for as long as i can remember.
Shop around for the selling rate, then do the same for them buying back.

Yes all good points. I didn't expect to get something for nothing but even so.

I had some spare dollars I had been keeping and was going to swap them back at the same time.

I'm glad I couldn't remember where I had put them.

The only story that has ever made me happy about exchange rates - must be 30 years ago, more. Bureau d'echange in a Paris station, offering one rate for £ sterling ............ and a slightly better rate for Scottish pounds.

If I have any Euros left I never change them back to Sterling and accept a low rate, as I know I will spend it again next time I'm in Europe.

That is one of the only good things about the Euro. I no longer have a draw ful of Francs, Marcs, Pesetas etc
