If it gives you 'peace of mind', do it. But your post suggests that you won't get 'peace of mind'!

I've always just sent it first class. No problems - yet! A good tip is to take a photocopy (or scan it in) before you send the old one off. Makes it easier for the Passport Office to sort you out if it does get 'lost'...

See it as insurance. The same sort of insurance that was sold by men in camel hair coats and violin shaped brief cases.
'You wanna dis delivered? You taka da insurance. Capiche?'

Make sure you get proper insurance to cover the full cost of losing it though.

It should get there tomorrow .Whether they deal with it .Is another matter .But just recently i complained about first class delivery time .And my letter told me first class has a window of 4-6 days .
Not in my day it didn't.And we have no machines to sort for us .We also had two deliveries each day .Oh how things have changed with modernisation .

I suspect this was more about the 'floor-walker' trying to drum up extra sales income than about the efficiency/security of the delivery service.

There never was a second delivery .According to a Female spokesperson on behalf of RM .Funny that we had one at our delivery office .You had to start it at 10-50 am .It was all down in the walk delivery book .Street by street and it was timed .And there were test letters sent out .To try and catch lazy postmen who would hide mail till the next morning .I knew a couple who lost their jobs over that practise .We called it 'jerking'.A very serious offence .

On a different but related theme, my local sorting office close at 8pm on Wednesdays - their card says so.

Yet, two weeks ago I went to collect a parcel and they only just let me in at 7.45pm.

At 7.47 another customer came to the door and was turned away. He pleaded that the card says we open until 8pm. Guy on door says we've already got a queue and this won't be cleared until after 8.

When a few of us already in the office said that he should not have turned him away, he said I;ve been here since 5am and I don't wanna be here any longer than 8.

No wonder they get no public sympathy when they whinge about their new working conditions.

I think I just used Recorded Delivery for my last passport application, which included my old passport and a cheque.

But, when I applied for a driving license in 2008, I sent that by Special Delivery as the application included a postal order to cover the cost of the application (about £45 if memory serves). Normal post wouldn't have paid compensation if a postal order was lost in the post, as I beleive it is treated like cash (which is covered by Special Delivery).

I have received valuable things, sent cash, and both sent/received important letters using normal postal services and had very few problems.

I think the problem is usually the recipients of letters who seem to conveniently file them away in the dustbin shaped filing cabinet. The local benefit office seems good at this, but they are certainly not the only ones.

I often request consumables from Royal Mail and they always send it Special Delivery - They don't even trust themselves!

I use recorded delivery frequently, that covers up to around £40ish, not sure of levels today. It usually works. The special delivery does compensate for higher levels and of course will guarantee next day. You pays your money and takes your choice, that would sound better in dialect wouldn't it. However, it does come to something when you have to use these services, thereby putting up costs all around for everyone.

I sent for a Sustrans map and it took about 2 weeks to come and that was after Christmas as well.

Hang on- doesn't this mean he has had a 15 hour shift? I don't blame him for wanting to go home and it's good cause for a complaint for long hours.

I've found that the passport check service with the post office was very good - you pay a small amount more but the staff check your package so that it is quicker when it reaches the passport office - sent mine off and a week later I got my new passport. I'd not send it special next day delivery but see if the post office has that service at your local one.

I've just renewed the photo on my driving licence.
The PO has a new machine where they can take your photo (took a couple of attempts - but no problem there as it won't accept imperfect pictures and they will conform to what is required) and sign with a stylus on a pad for the signature. Cost £4 over price of renewal. New licence back in 4 days.

Don't know if you can do passports the same way but it would be good if possible.

I hadn't realised they could do it there until I went in and was queueing up for £5 of change for the photo machine. No bother of sending any documents via the RM and paying extra for secure delivery.
