i have a degenerative spinal condition and yesterday while seeing the consultant he suggested i try a Posturepedic memory foam mattress, so off i go to have a look at them........ fekin hell, i think it would be cheaper to get a spine transplant.
so before i splash the cash get mugged in the bed shop , have any of you good people tried one and what are your thoughts/experiences, good or bad .

thanks

Ive had a foam mattress for years. Brilliant, only thing i would swap in for would be a mud bed.

can you not get one on loan for a short while? My other half has spine issues and she tried one and couldn't get along with it, although very comfortable she found they were also very warm. a quick google for 'memory foam mattress trial' throws up quite a few.

We have a memory foam, I am not won over by it. We both have back issues since swapping, though this may not be related I don't think it helped.

We have a pocket sprung mattress with memory foam on the top (all part of the mattress). It was a bloody fortune, over a grand, and its about a foot thick and weighs the same as a small elephant.

Pocket sprung mattresses cost a lot as they are hand made. Something like 2000 springs in ours.

It is however the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on.

Go try a few out.

we changed ours to memory foam about 3 years ago and yes lost an arm and leg when we paid for it but we have slept a lot better since

I have back problems (tethered spinal cord and fused vertebrae in my neck) and I spent one night on a memory foam mattress. Never ever ever again. I could hardly move the next day . I'm normally pretty ok,, but that mattress absolutely crippled me for 24 hours or so

Edit// My OH doesn't have back problems and he loves memory foam mattresses.

We had a memory foam mattress, totally blumen' useless so it was, gave it me back problems, and they got worse, it was so bad sometimes I had to roll out of the bed onto the floor and crawl along the floor to wall drag my myself up the wall to get upright. Chucked it in the skip and got a sprung mattress, dropped a lot of cash on it, it is the second most comfortable bed I have ever been on. And no more back pain.

We bought one with our new bed after trying the machine in Bensons that is supposed to make sure you get the best mattress for you.
It's awful. It isn't anywhere near as soft as the one in the shop - even after a year. It leaves a dip where you sleep which makes it uncomfortable if you roll onto another bit of the mattress.
And it's so hot!
I wish we'd saved the money and not bothered tbh.

50% of people love them and 50% hate them. I hate them; they're an overpriced con - how to add value to a chunk of cheap furniture foam by clever advertising. They make me sweat and you sink into them, making it hard to turn over in bed. I have also heard that after a few years they collapse.

I got one in January last year - it's fabulous! Sealey Posturepaedic (sprung mattress with thick memory-foam top). I suffer from a dodgy back and the old mattress was too soft and it was crippling me. I'd certainly get another one in a flash, but I guess it's like everything else - they work for some people and not for others.

I know you can get mattresses that are purely memory foam - I tried one in the shop and it was hideous - it felt like kipping on a sponge.

I suppose it depends how hard you like your bed. I hate sleeping on anything with springs in it, I'd rather sleep on the floor.

I have back problems although nothing as serious as the OP.
Soft mattresses do not do it for me.
A firm mattress with natural fillings is what I use. It's not 'hot' as others have said memory foam can be, probably because the wool in it isn't clammy like foam and sort of lets the body breathe.

Top tip 1 - DO NOT GO TO BENSONS! Bunch of crooks and I had to take them to court over a rubbish bed. Shop will not deal with customer problems so less support than buying on line.

Top tip 2. - Following from issue 1 we now have a nice mattress with a memory foam separate "topper" on it. The memory foam particularly but the mattress as well need to be turned round regularly. If it is all in one unit you have no options to turn it over. Also memory foam will last much shorter time than the rest of the mattress (bensons lasted 4 months and went to a flat lump like underlay). So with separate parts it will all last longer by being turned and also you can replace the foam section more frequently if needed.

Top tip 3.- Ikea. Nice range of mattresses and toppers. All at good prices. Delivery is a bit expensive.

Hope this helps and you get sorted out.

I tried a memory foam mattress. It felt like I was lying on/in a very large marshmarrow...horrid. We ended up with a pocket spring mattress with a non-foam topper which is amazingly comfortable. Good luck.
