Showered, latte in hand, still buzzing with a warm sense of self satisfaction.

cant belive it only took an hour, it takes an hour on the "office motorbike" at 40 mph, just goes to show how a bike can filter more efficiently than anything.

I kept up an average of 19 mph, but did benifit from two very long downhill sections at over 30mph for a good mile each.

If you are a tall chap with a shock of white hair and blue oakleys, then I used you as a pace maker running through catford and lewisham, you were running at just my pace...thanks for that.

and, from this minimal experience, the award for the best bit of advice given goes to.....

back after this short break!

So, now to the awards ceremony.

(applause and opening violin music)

(Jonny walks across stage to the podium, golden envelope in hand, spotlight focuses on his lycra clad figure)

"Well, I must first say that I have greatly appreciated all your advice and taken it all to heart. I have found it both helpful & enlightening but also very re-assuring, you are all very kind and obviously keen to help others get on their bikes.

Big shout to all of you."

TFL should pay you all commission…Boris owes you big time

But there has to be a winner and so,

(with the sound of the John Williams orchestra in the back ground)

It gives me great pleasure to announce the awards for the BEST ADVICE GIVEN in a commuting category

So without further delay,

The Gold Medal Award for "best advice given" goes to

(drums start to roll, camera picks up all the main players faces in the crowd).

BRAINS!!!! (crowd goes mad!!!)
For his simple and succinct advice to "keep to the rivers". It sounds obvious now, but river don’t do hills, so this advice (taken to heart) proved essential in planning a route that was both enjoyable and do-able. Thanks Brains. (Oh and purple-polly, don’t be thinking I didn’t notice that your advice was of a similar vain…I spotted ya, you don’t get away that easy…..so big shout to you too)

And now ladies and gentlemen it gives me great pleasure to announce that the Silver medal award for "Second best advice given"… goes to.

Karlos -the-Jackal.
Only three weeks in the saddle but still able to offer sage advice such as checking out the bike-hike website…I'm totally addicted to the site….shifting and tweaking my route to the maximum advantage in the ever elusive search of those "rivers"…great site…totally invaluable, couldn't have got on the saddle without it. Cheers Karlos

Lastly the Bronze Medal award for third best advice given goes to…

…well its kinda a joint bronze really as many of you (Arch, yello, User1314, Simon brooke, Lazy, Wheeliedweenie etc) have all suggested that I don’t get too hung up on doing this every day, to ease into it to keep up the enjoyment and motivation, for that reason I shall take the office bike home tonight and in again tomorrow then take all the time I like riding home on Friday night

……………over CRYSTAL PALACE!!!

(Dramatic pounding of kettle drums)

(Fade to black)

.. and that buzz is a good feeling, ain't it? Congratulations jonny, first on doing it, second on doing it in such a good time. That time will only get quicker, by the way ..

no worries Karlos, will do.

Just shooting out to a meeting in Mayfair and will figure out how to post it when I return....basicaaly I run down through bellingham (big downhill section) to lewisham, off into lady well and hilly fileds/brockley, down onto the camberwell road, along past the oval and over vauxhall bridge then embankment to earls court and kensington.

all down hill to ladywell then small climb (25 mteres) in around 100m lenght up hilly fields, then again in brockley (drakefell road) bit higher and bit longer but with flat breaks...but tiny really in the grand scheme...then flat or down hill to and along the rivers.....gotta love those rivers!!!

scuse typos..in a rush

Enjoy the smug feeling, it never goes away. The other day my sister and I both headed home to my parents, me on my bike, she on public transport. I arrived a good 10-15 minutes ahead of her and it's only about six miles. I was sitting in the front garden stroking her cat when she arrived disheveled from a packed bus. Ha!

Karlos, here you go.

www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=12324

Not sure it's going to work for you tho as it looks like you would need to trek across chislehurst (via the roller coaster at summer hill, chis station) to get to the start point) from your place at scadbury
