I read this story in disbelief this morning also. The mind boggles.

They just made a pretty ignorant comment, not really thinking about it from all angles.

For the parish council to suggest it might be considered a blip, for the county council to even entertain the idea suggests that they're a bunch of cretins.

Meanwhile Norman Hulme, Essex County Council's cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "This is an interesting idea from Navestock Parish Council.

"However, the vast majority of Essex residents want to travel on safer, smoother roads which is why it is the policy of Essex County Council to fill all potholes as soon as is practical.

"Therefore, regrettably in this instance, we will have to take the opposite view from the parish council.

"We will be making arrangements to fill in these potholes as soon as possible."

This is because they subscribe to the idea that speed is the root cause of all accidents.

The notion of 'traffic-calming potholes' is some kind of oxymoron - potholes don't calm me down either when I'm driving or riding my bike!

Why not remove traffic lights as it'll make drivers approach junctions with more caution or get rid of safety railings to make people to walk more carefully.

Actually they're great ideas - I'm applying for a job with the Essex council in question as I'm quite clearly daft enough for them!
