potholes - how long to fix?

I reported a stretch of potholed major road* last night to my local council - including one narrow rut about half a foot deep just about precisely in secondary position that could easily trap a wheel - and they emailed me back saying it would be inspected within 10 days. The website doesn't give any idea on how long actual fixes will take, just the next time the pothole team is working in the area.

Is there no legislation to make them fix it faster? I was going to ration how often I reported the potholes on my commute as there does seem to be a lot nowadays - a lot of it's unrideable unless you're in primary, but at this rate maybe I had better register them all asap.

Has the LA privatised the road maintenance or not? That makes a big difference to how long it'll take. It's privatised here and they tend to not bother with individual potholes. There was a street on my commute with 40 or 50 fairly deep potholes that they left for ages and then all of a sudden one night they came and filled in about 20 of them. Same with a stretch of road on my training loop where they patched about 20 yards to get rid of the rifts and potholes.

There are loads that have appeared over the last month due to the freezing weather. The one in my road is about 4 weeks old now while the ones at work are about 7 weeks.

Ive only reported a couple pot holes to 'fill that hole' . One got repaired fast, the other took for ages. The difference with the first one perhaps despite it being on a slower road and probably less dangerous, I'd pointed out that it was part of the council's core path network. I'm skeptical to that actually making a difference though

I've noticed it can take longer in winter, but most of the potholes I've reported have been filled in 48-72 hours.

Tell them that it's over 50mm deep and a significant risk to life and they should be out in no time..

I did say it looks about half a foot deep, about the right distance out for cyclist to be riding and that any cyclists who don't know the road could be in serious trouble - all true. Then again, the roads round here have always been bad - my driving instructor used to say you could tell when you've passed the boundary into Stockport from the road surface - so anyone who cycles down the A6 for the first time in the dark and heavy traffic is probably a bit doo-lally

Our local council repair potholes within 24 hours of them being reported. They have an email link on their website and send someone out to patch potholes on any public road, normally the same day

The only time I tried reporting a pothole it took a year to get it fixed, but a friend of mine reported one after falling off his bike (he did tell them that it was the cause of his fall and subsequent injury) and it was repaired the next day...

There's a pothole on Wembley High Road that thet repair every couple of weeks. Why they don't try to make it more permanent I don't know!

I reported one and it was filled within a week; however, they'd just dropped the stuff in and within a week it was all back out and the hole was back in all its glory.

What I really like at the mo is when they take the top surface off a road and resurface it; they somehow never get the heights right and the drain covers are usually a good 3-5cm or more lower than the road surface afterwards....
