There seem to be a number of large craters appearing on central London's streets at the moment. I was nearly offed last night as I cycled through Dalston, no idea how I managed to stay on. Also, what the hell is TfL doing around Tottenham Court Road? It is an absolute nightmare to ride or walk through

there are Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall

I thought the councils had done a pretty good job to filling them in (in terms of timeliness, not necessarily quality.

Certainly there have been loads of road works last week heading SW out of London towards Surrey and nost of them have been filled. Of course, once past Kingston, Surrey CC roads are terrible.

Kingston is having a bit of a moment - they have phases of digging up the gas works on the ring road, which predominately p*sses off car drivers, although I do see one or two hardy souls on bicycles on there. The cut through with a bike lane, for buses and taxis only, through Brook Street to the College roundabout is completely closed at the moment and I have to dismount and walk round them both ways, there aren't any convenient dropped kerbs for me to ride up and round on the pavement for about 10 yards. Hopping up a kerb isn't something to do on a Brompton .....

Portland Road, part of my commute as it comes out right by where I work and is nice and quiet (I hadn't cycled for 20 years until January), has a really lumpy, gritty road surface and up to this week, lots of potholes. It is a big cut through for the Royal Mail vans but they are usually pretty considerate to cyclists, I guess they have plenty of their own. Seems to have been patched up a bit this week but still bumpy as heck.

More recent B's have a clip that allows you to lock the back wheel. Makes it much easier to carry the bike up steps too.

My Brompton has the clip, so its fine that way, but I couldn't 'hop' onto the pavement while riding the way the local MTB boys do, if I want to keep riding (this stretch is very quiet for pedestrians) then I have to find a dropped kerb somewhere. Which are all blocked off by the roadworks.

Please report any potholes on here

www.fillthathole.org.uk

I've used it quite a few times and the holes have been filled in a fast / respectable amount of time (except one that's been getting worse since before Christmas, so I've re-reported that one).

Cambridge Circus? (TCR Tube station) Serious Crossrail work going on there

Actually it's quite nice now the top end of Charing Cross Rd is closed off, but I don't know how long that's going to stay the case for

I'm with you - they seem to be filling the holes rapidly enough. And, as you say, Surrey's roads are horrible - but then they always will be

I'm glad other areas are ok but the bit of Dalston I ride through is a mess. In fact the A10 is cratered from Liverpool Street to the start of the Stoke Newington gyratory with potholes that go right through the top surface of the road.

is that the part that was re-surfaced a year or two ago? I've noticed that some recent resurfacing is coming up in lumps.

Dellers, I don't disagree with you as to current condition - regrettably I speak from rather painful experience of the tarmac near Lingfield in October. But "always"? Why should that be? It is generally a v affluent area so business and residential tax capacity should be way above national norms.

I had some experience of negotiating County Council contracts a few years ago; of six such CCs Surrey were distinguished for their incompetence and lack of respect for the at risk proposal expenditure borne by bidders. So, is it a general malaise at their HQ?

Simon, I suppose SW London CTC has made the usual representations to Surrey but I wonder if it is time to name and shame.
