You can only trackstand properly on a fixed because to maintain balance you have to push backwards if that makes sense

On a trike we call it stopping!

If you concentrate on balancing you have to be standing, what to do with you legs and the front wheel will be instinctive. If you can do it in a doorway or between gate posts this could help.

Try using the camber of the road. Out of the saddle is easier for most people. Try to relax and remember that you only need very small shifts of weight to remain balanced. Then practice. Once you get the knack, it's, well, as easy as riding a bike!

You can't really give tips for balance - you have to acquire it, unfortunately. Although if I told you that my 10 year old can track stand one-handed (some of his mates can do it no handed), that might give you some encouragement ;)

That might just embarrass me that children can do it and I'm struggling. I'm 22 haha.

Fixed wheel fanatic.
+1 everything everyone else has said.
Also try looking into the distance, staring down at your feet/wheel etc is a sure fire way of losing balance.
Lead leg at the front (the one you set off with) and use the other to 'balance' the force you are applying to the crank (if that makes sense).
I learnt to do it and yet I have never felt the need to do it on the road. Mind you I'd probably fall off if I tried!
Good luck.

Although not proper trackstanding, the good lady wife and I are both pretty good at staying upright at about half a mile an hour ( the trick being to stand up on the pedals so you can move the bike around under you ) whilst for example waiting to turn right at a junction. The big advantage is that it's surprising how many motorists will suddenly give way to you 'cos they think you're about to fall off - ! Wahey, pedalpower - !
