You will always need some cash in hand as some outlets, b and b etc does not accept cash. I find that tesco provide the best exchange rate and they don't charge you for cash advance if you use their credit card.
But whenever possible, I use credit card, Santander bank zero card.
I have used it in so many countries, Asian, USA, central America, Europe. It has always been the cheapest option.
I worked out that for a 10 day holiday it saved about £25 or more.

+1 for the Caxton FX card. Used it last year with no problems. Last year was Visa, now a Mastercard but hopefully this won't change anything. The exchange rate for euros is considerably poorer now though thanks to the eu referendum

Quick update, in the end we went with the FairFX pre paid card. You can lock in the exchange rate and take out more cash more frequently, even though there is a 1.50 charge each time. Thanks for your help and advice. (also got a lump of Euros too cheaply from using
