Having recently had my bi-annual eye test then it appears age is catching up with me, again. Even stronger script this time around, again. I am looking for some new cool prescription sunglasses. I have never owned any, just rode with standard sunglasses but I am now struggling, and dangerous.

Seems to be a decision between RX Inserts or straight prescription lenses (no insert). RX inserts appeal because I can change lenses for winter riding or low light, and can even change the insert in two years if my script changes. However I am concerned that with an insert fitted then my eyelashes will rub against them. This will become very annoying very quickly. However go straight script lenses then in two years they are redundant.

Dilemma! Anyone got any experience with inserts?

Contact lenses, then you can wear whatever cool/cheap/coloured/camp eye fashion you desire. It works for me.

Ah, I have to admit I had not actually considered contact lenses (as he hangs his in head in shame). I used to use them when I had motorbikes, Dailys. Much better solution! Thanks for the shot of common sense.

Perfect, you know how to use them already. I have a subscription service with specsavers so get free eyetests, free pairs of glasses and they tweak the lense prescription from time to time if needed so I always have the best vision possible. I think they do a free trial if you want to try it out before signing up.

I have a pair of Rudy Project Gozen with the Rx inserts. My eyelashes do indeed rub against them and it is annoying but only for about a minute, then I just stop noticing it and they're fine.

I think the insert option look and feel peculiar on me. I have direct glaze transition Oakleys, not cheap (not far off £300). Contacts would be a cheaper solution if used to them, you can have much cheaper cycling specs

I have an appointment at specsavers to try them, I'm thinking of giving them a go, how much do they work out at ?
A quid a day or so, often cheaper, so negligible for occasional use.

Never wanted inserts and I've seen plenty of complaints about them misting up. Go and see a decent independent optician and get them to show you sport frames then have them glazed with photochromic prescription lenses, varifocal if that's what you need. You'll be able to use them by day or night and the vision will be superb, you won't regret the money.

Thanks for the advice, as ever.

I am going to go down the contact lens route. I did ok with them on motorbikes, but wouldn't want them everyday. Should be fine for weekend and evening cycling though. Three rides a week, at a pound a day.....£300 gets me two years by which time my script will need changing anyway. I then don't need to buy another £300 pair of prescription sunglasses. Result.

You would only need to change the lenses, not the frame but yes, if happy with contacts, a good solution

I had the same dilemma, contact lenses for cycling are not really an option for me anymore. As I've got older my eyes get dry and make contacts uncomfortable after about three hours. Plus being long sighted I wouldn't be able to see my Garmin, but that's not so important while I'm riding.
I use the rx inserts and agree, the eyelashes do touch at first but if you adjust the position on your nose the annoying sensation goes quickly.

I have weird thing with touching my eyelashes, a bit like nails on a blackboard. I like big Oakley sunglasses as they are well away from your eyelashes. I know, weird.
