based on my wife as a student:

Top shop voucher or new look voucher. both are quite fashionable shops and found in most city centres. I'm sure if she was planning a shopping trip she'd remember to take the voucher with her. I believe Top Shop will still do student discount when presented with a voucher, making it stretch a bit further.

top shop's prices are a little higher than new look's tho.

the other option is HMV, you say she's into music, as you're probably aware, they also do films allowing her to treat herself a little and perhaps have a film evening with friends.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I like the idea of some cash plus a real thing (I like Dell's lamp idea) so I'll probably go for that.

(Plus a term's supply of condoms obviously)
